Background CARDI experience in the field has found that conflict-affected communities have not automatically returned to the practices in peace-time due to mistrust between community groups (based on alignment with differing warring parties during the conflict) and a lack of confidence in, or apathy vis-à-vis, community-driven initiatives.
To address the problems described correctly, CARDI will intervene at the village level to strengthen “community cohesion” and “(re)establish linkages” between rural conflict-affected communities and service providers. By contributing to strengthened cohesion and recovery at the village level, the project seeks to contribute toward the broader goal of peaceful return, reintegration, and recovery in conflict-affected communities in Aceh.
An experienced and well-supported field team will needed to work intensively with a limited number of villages to rebuild community institutions and best practices for community dialogue, problem-solving, and joint action. At the same time, the project seeks to reconnect these communities, which have largely been left out of post-tsunami and post-Helsinki recovery efforts to date, with broader networks of service providers, resources and programs for recovery and reintegration, and information on the peace process.
The development and advance non violent communication and effective participatory facilitation skills are increasingly called upon to mediate among various stakeholders in these challenging situations.
This training will provide participants with an understanding of the basic principles, skills and techniques used in analyzing and mediating various stakeholder able to communicate their needs and concern effectively and valuable on long-term.
Participants will increase their knowledge and skills in analyzing types of personalities they may encounter, assessing management options and developing strategies to manage effective meeting, learn a variety of time and meeting management techniques in order to helping the group solve problems and follows it’s ground rules, and learn how to plan for and support collaborative participatory approaches. Importantly participants will learn to take a proactive role in guiding the communities and groups addressing their need achieve their goals.
Training Objectives The objectives of the training are to: • Increase participants’ understanding and knowledge about effective communication strategy and why they need to concern; • Provide skills, tools and processes for analyzing groups existing resource can organize for leading to better management outcomes; • Examine different effective meeting management approaches to enable participants to make an informed decision regarding which approach can be used to the best advantage; • Provide communication skills so that participants are better able to build agreement between parties; • To provide opportunities for participants to share experiences and ideas on communication and facilitation management.

Training Design and Process The training will incorporate lectures from experienced Trainers and other specialist experience resources in communication and facilitation with a range of participatory activities, specific case study materials and participants’ own experiences.
Central to the learning outcomes of the course is a one-day field visit to a ‘live’ conflict where participants will have the unique opportunity to observe and explore the many dimensions of group dynamic and assess strategies for managing it.
The design of the training will involve participants in a process of ongoing critical reflection, allowing them to link the training contents with their own experiences and apply effective communication strategy and management techniques in their daily work.
The development of a personalized ‘action plan’ is an important part of integrating the training into the participants work environment and providing direction for the participant to achieve their desired outcomes.
Venue and Date of Training Training will take place in CARDI Calang Compound at 13th – 17th March 2008
Qualifications · Have a strong background and understanding of local context. · Have experience on assisting in conflict area (at least in 2 conflict area ; most requirement one at Aceh) · Have success story on increasing local capacity, if necessary on different level such as : 1. ground ; community groups and village leaders, 2. middle ; activist/local NGO, government/police/ military officer at sub district level, and 3. top level ; Government/policy/ military at district and province level also legislative/ DPRD Tk I/Tk II) · Have a clear strategy and approach on different vulnerable groups that affected by conflict (Right based approach and gender sensitivity approach) · Have a strategy and understanding on non violence communication and conflict transformation step in term to contributing on advocacy strategy · Respect on local resources ability and code of conduct of resources right in publishing (means not produce and publishing their material without get permission and approval from all stakeholder and holder resources on their training or assistances of conflict population) · Willing to share all information covering/get during their training period and report provide bilingual (Indonesia and English) · Methodology of training will including : visit and FGD with community on one or two selected criteria (disclosure/ spotlight activity), 75% participatory tools using, and including participatory monitoring and evaluation tools of skill, knowledge and behaviors changes
